Aluminum coils are not "raw materials," but rather "semi-finished products."

The Value Path from Industrial Roll Materials to Finished Building Products

How much building material can be produced from one roll of aluminum? Let's do the math on materials.

Aluminum coils are not 'raw materials,' but rather 'semi-finished products.'

In the building materials processing industry, aluminum coils are the most common substrate form. However, many people's understanding of 'aluminum coils' is still limited to 'a large roll of metal'—how many finished products can it actually be made from? How many square meters of aluminum roofing sheets, how many aluminum ceiling panels, how many aluminum single-panel panels can it produce?

Behind this question lie three more crucial judgments: What thickness of roll material is the most economical? What is a reasonable processing loss rate? Does the supplier have a full range of roll material specifications?

First, let's do some calculations: the 'production formula' for a roll of aluminum.

The calculation of aluminum coil output is not complicated; the core formula is:

Quantity of finished products = Total weight of aluminum coils ÷ (Finished product dimensions × Thickness × Aluminum density)

the 3003-H24 aluminum alloy coil, which is most common in the construction industry , as an example, the density of aluminum is 2.70 g/cm³. Assume that the parameters of a standard aluminum coil are: width 1200 mm, weight of a single coil 5 tons, and thickness 0.8 mm.

Step 1: Calculate the total length of a single roll.

Total length = Weight ÷ (Width × Thickness × Density)
= 5000kg ÷ (1.2m × 0.0008m × 2700kg/m³)
≈ 5000 ÷ 2.592 ≈ 1929 meters

Step 2: Convert according to different finished product specifications

Finished product type

Common thickness

Area that can be produced per roll

Equivalent quantity (based on common specifications)

Aluminum roofing sheet (Type 840 profiled sheet)

0.8mm

Approximately 2300㎡

Approximately 2300㎡ (effective coverage area)

Aluminum ceiling (600×600mm)

0.6mm

Approximately 3100㎡

Approximately 8600 pieces

Aluminum single-panel (cut into 1.2m x 2.4m sections)

1.2mm

Approximately 1500㎡

Approximately 520 photos

Aluminum honeycomb panel

0.8mm

Approximately 2300㎡

Depending on the size of the composite panel

II. Thickness selection determines 'output efficiency' and 'economic efficiency'.

Many processing plants only care about 'price' when purchasing aluminum coils, ignoring the impact of 'thickness' on output.

For every 0.1mm increase in thickness, the output area per roll decreases by approximately 11%. Taking a 5-ton roll as an example:

thickness

Single roll area

Compared to a 0.6mm difference in output

0.6mm

Approximately 2570㎡

benchmark

0.7mm

Approximately 2200㎡

-14.4%

0.8mm

Approximately 1930㎡

-24.9%

1.0mm

Approximately 1540㎡

-40.0%

This is why, when selecting materials for a project, 'good enough' is more economical than 'the thicker the better.' For roofs with purlin spacing of less than 1 meter, 0.8mm is sufficient; blindly choosing 1.0mm will directly increase material costs by about 25% .

III . What determines how much good stuff can be produced from a roll of aluminum?

The above calculations are theoretical values. In actual production, factors affecting output go far beyond thickness and weight:

1. Sheet shape – Wavy sheets cannot be used with
aluminum coils that have poor straightness. During the forming process, the sheet surface will be wavy, and the entire section will be scrapped. The straightness of good substrate should be ≤2mm/m, while poor substrate may exceed 5mm/m – the difference in output is immediately apparent.

2. Consistency of Material Condition – Stable Material Conditions Lead to Stable Production Lines.
If the condition of the same batch of H24 aluminum coils fluctuates significantly, the forming parameters must be frequently adjusted, leading to a sharp increase in the scrap rate. Stable material conditions ensure a stable production line.

3. Surface Quality – Scratches refer to
aluminum coils with scratches or oxide spots on their surface that are considered defective. These defects are magnified after pressing, resulting in immediate scrapping. Good substrates are inspected for surface quality on a coil-by-coil basis before leaving the factory .

V. DIXXIN 'Output Guarantee'

As a company with its own source of aluminum coil substrate ,DIXXIN can ensure that every time a processing plant uses a machine, it has a clear understanding of the process.

Thickness Guarantee : Full inspection with online thickness gauge, with deviation controlled within ±0.015mm - this means that the specifications ordered by the processing plant according to the drawings will be delivered exactly as specified, without any 'shrinkage'.

Plate shape guarantee : straightness ≤2mm/m, uneven parts at the beginning and end are removed before leaving the factory - the processing plant does not need to 'gamble' on the beginning and end sections.

Condition assurance : Each batch comes with a mechanical performance report, and the condition is clearly marked - the processing plant does not need to 'test a batch and adjust the parameters once'.

With 25 years of experience supplying aluminum coils and serving hundreds of processing plants, DIXXIN knows which aluminum coils are the easiest to process, produce the fewest scraps, and generate the highest output.
